Walk 1 - Causeway and Chantry

walk 1 map

1. Having parked at the Cross Keys Inn, proceed to St Nicolas' church and walk north along the road to the farm buildings (New Barn) on your right. (Excellent views behind you to St Nicolas church, Chute Manor, and Winchester Downs in the distance.)

2. Continue straight ahead on the track, between a fence on both sides, to the Chute Causeway and turn left. If this track is too muddy or overgrown, continue on the road, and turn left at 2 T-junctions which will also bring you onto the Causeway. (Excellent views across Hippenscombe Bottom to Tidcombe and Fosbury.)

3. After approx 3/4 mile, turn left at the large wooden marker post (New Zealand Farm) along a wide metalled track (Chantry Lane) towards a white bungalow on your right.

4. Immediately before the bungalow, bear right onto a bridleway, and after 200 yards, turn left through a gate to follow a broad grass strip, keeping the fence to your left. (Delightful views towards the Winchester Downs and Salisbury Plain, including Sidbury Hill.)

5. You soon arrive at a bend in the mettalled drive to Chantry House. Do not follow the drive, but go through a gate immediately on your right, following a track diagonally across the field to a further gate with Chantry House on your left and a wooden barn on your right.

6. Continue straight ahead on a clear track for 1/2 mile, keeping the fence on your left, past a copse and across open fields, until you arrive at a broad byway.

7. Turn left along the byway, steeply downhill, to the lowest point in the walk at (early 18th century) Dean Farm, immediately after which is a steep 100 feet climb, before returning to the Cross Keys Inn and the start of your walk.
