Chute Cricket Club’s rapid progress since resurrection in 2006 has been substantially facilitated thanks to a new National Lottery-funded project.
Chute Cricket Club has been awarded a £6,750 grant by Sport England, which is working with local communities to get people playing more sport. The funds will be used to buy a tandem ride-on roller, continuing the work undertaken in recent years to improve the playing surface.
Having developed the cricket square in recent years to now accommodate 4 ‘match’ pitches, plus a further 2 ‘practice’ pitches, a new heavy roller was deemed essential if the club were to continue with growth aspirations including ladies, youth and, in due course, league cricket. Acquiring the new roller represents a substantial boost towards achieving those goals.
The order has been placed with Power Precision & Fabrication Ltd for a Poweroll Club ride-on tandem roller, with a 36" 1,530kg capability. Power Precision & Fabrication supply rollers to many County cricket grounds, as well as top tennis clubs, including Wimbledon where the AELTC currently use 10 Poweroll rollers.
Sport England invests National Lottery and Exchequer funding in projects that will grow and sustain participation in grassroots sport and create opportunities for people to excel at their chosen sport.
Chris Stock, who has been the driving force behind the Chute Cricket Club’s resurrection, and who is the club’s Secretary, said: “Chute Cricket Club is a rapidly developing rural club but we’re always looking to attract more members and to increase the amount of cricket played by and in the village. We’re delighted to have received Lottery funding which will allow us to considerably increase the quality of our cricket pitches and allow a substantial increase in the amount of cricket played.”
Sport England’s Regional Lead for the South West said: “If community sports clubs want to attract and retain participants, they need to be able to offer quality facilities for everyone. The improvements to Chute Cricket Club’s facilities will be welcomed by regular users and those who are new to cricket.”

The Club:
Home games are played on the King George V Playing Field, Hatchett Hill, Lower Chute, SP11 9DU, where a thoroughly modern and well equipped pavilion provides all the requisite facilities. While this is a shared village facility, the cricket square is protected and especially cared for. In September 2008, 2 new wickets were laid down, resulting in vastly improved pitches during 2009. Further work was undertaken in September 2009, so the 2010 season promises to be even better than before.
History:
Chute Cricket Club can trace some of its history back to 1885, and while there have been periods when no cricket has been played in the Chutes, the current club is growing and prospering. The current focus is to continue developing the club through playing friendly but competitive cricket, by encouraging youngsters, and above all, developing the skills and enthusiasm of all those who are interested in contributing.
